Downtown San Francisco is about to get a little bit brighter this holiday season (it is possible, apparently).

Gif the Halls, a holly jolly organization (made up of WP Engine Labs, 10up, and the Gray Foundation), bent on delivering your merry tidings to the public is giving their own take on the typical holiday greeting card.

Between December 20 and 24, they’ll project your own personally-written holiday e-card against the walls of buildings in downtown San Francisco along Market Street between 6am and 6pm.

Here’s how it works:

First, register (free) with an email account or your Facebook page. Then, once you log in, you choose from one of seven artwork .gif images from artists around the city to accompany your message. In the few days leading up to Christmas, Gif the Halls will project your card on a wall downtown.

“We wanted to marry the well-wishes of Christmas in the city with emerging artists,” Tomas Puig, the Head of Labs at WP Engine said. “Our goal was to bring artistic technology to San Francisco in a larger way.”

Emerging digital designers are getting their work exposed, people can send public messages to their loved ones (even in other languages!) and city dwellers can observe a little beauty in action. “The idea was that people on their commute or doing Christmas shopping on Market might look up and see a message and think, ‘Hey, that’s lovely.’ and be a part of the moment.”

If you miss it, don’t worry: they record each one and will send you a copy of it moment in the literal spotlight.

And passerbys will be part of the greeting as well. In watching the greeting on the wall, they will be captured in the video of the greetings. As Puig says, “we wanted to create something that lives and breathes within the city.”
